I heard a lot of bad things about office 08, but also heard that iwork 08 isn't useful for a student. Based on experience or knowledge please tell me which one to get. Best Answer: Both programs have their ups and downs. Google sketchup. IWork is compatible with MS Office, and can read & write office files fairly well. There are (or were with iwork 06) some glitches with converting keynote files to ppt, but usually it was more complex things like hyperlinks that had issues, a normal slide would be fine. However, the new pages is a huge improvement over the last version.

Now you can go in as a simple text document OR as a layout document. Pages far exceeds word in the ability to put in graphics & make it look professional. Numbers, I am not impressed by personally. Its interface is ok, not a great difference between excel. What Apple bills as an improvement is formulas. If you have problems with making sense of them, Numbers is great.

If you are like me, and are good with them- you can make due with either program. MS Office has always had its issues, but fortunately, the developers for Office on the Mac decided that the poor experience of most Office 2007 users with the new interface meant sticking with what works. The biggest problem with office 2007 & 2008 is with saving files. Many people forget that office 2007 & 2008 has a new file format. Instead of a.doc its a.docx; and most older office programs have no clue what to do with these file types.

So as long as you go into the application preferences, and set the office apps to save as normal doc, xls, and ppt files; you're fine. Also: There are no Macros in Office 2008. They took them out, much to the dismay of people I know in business school. Personally, I hate macros, so i could care less. But some of the menu bar tweaks are annoying. When it comes to cost, the $150 for the student version is much cheaper than $400 for the full (and as long as you don't need exchange, there isn't really a difference); but iWork is still half the price.
