The machine is completely non-upgradeable. Apple's rejiggered butterfly keyboard is still an inferior typing experience. Retina screen isn't true 4K. I have used more laptops in my life than I can even recall.

I owned a second-hand, sticker-encrusted Titanium PowerBook G4 that was stolen during a road trip. I installed Linux on an excruciatingly slow PowerBook G3 for IMDB and Google searches while watching TV. I've upgraded, repaired, purchased, gifted, traded, and tinkered with iBooks and MacBooks galore, both for work and for fun.

However, the more recent MacBooks I've used have been a mixed bag. Microsoft office alternatives free. Not only are Apple's last couple MacBook iterations, but I find that the computing experience has been compromised in some key areas. Apple's laptops used to be so competitive that I'd recommend them just for use with Windows. But then PC manufacturers started upping their game, and since late 2016, it's been extremely hard to recommend the Pros. How did we get to this place? The new attempt to atone for some of the line's recent performance missteps by throwing powerful new processors, tweaked graphics cards, a massaged keyboard, more RAM, and bigger SSDs into a product meant for the professionals who consistently rely on these machines.

But over the past week that I’ve been using the new, 15-inch MacBook Pro running on a top-of-the-line Intel processor, I’ve found that what Apple's offering has a surprising number of caveats—its eye-watering price tag among them—you’ll have to consider. Cores Aplenty Apple gets complaints from the Mac faithful.

Mac fans are a passionate minority who like to kvetch about everything from file systems to UI consistency. The top complaint might be that the Cupertino company just isn't as consistent at updating its products as other PC makers. For instance, the continues to feature Intel chips from 2014.

And desktop users still wait with bated breath for the triumphant return of the Mac Pro, which was last released in 2013 andnever got better internals.

The option for an Intel Core i9 processor with six cores and a clock-speed ceiling of 4.8GHz makes its way to the 2018 refresh of Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro (starts at $2,399; $4,699 as tested). Not only does it offer the best raw computing performance we've seen from an Apple, but it also helps make the MacBook Pro competitive with similarly priced Windows machines—mostly gaming laptops and workstations. Even better, this beast of a chip fits into the same sleek enclosure that the MacBook Pro has sported for a few years now, making it the rare desktop-replacement laptop that's also handsome, thin, and light. Perhaps best of all for people who actually want to use this machine away from a power outlet, the machine returned excellent results on our battery-life testing. It costs a pretty penny, but overall it's one of the best 15-inch laptops that power users can buy right now. The new MacBook Pro's crowning achievement is shoehorning a much-upgraded processor and a potent graphics chip into the same enclosure as last year's model without changing the physical design.
