Was it Disk Doctor that you ran before the problem surfaced? Did you boot to the Norton Utilities CD before running it? Does your NU CD boot into an OS version that is at least 9.1? (If not, stop using it.) Did Disk Doctor claim it had fixed everything that was wrong before you quit it?

You can't use fsck in OS 9 — it's a Unix function, only available in OS X. Norton Utilities has a perfectly awful reputation in OS X, and those who were unfortunate enough to buy it for use with OS X disks are routinely and emphatically urged in these forums to discard it forever. I don't know how well or badly the OS-9-compatible versions are generally thought to work, and I don't own one — I stopped upgrading my copy at v. 5.0.2 (which boots into OS 8.6), and I've never used that version on any disk that contains OS 9 or X.

I don't know why your monitor has gone dark, but given the fact that it works fine when you boot to the external drive, the problem is clearly software-based. If your internal drive is already backed up, I'd recommend erasing it and reinstalling OS 9.1. You could try trashing your 'Display Preferences' from the System Folder on the internal disk. These control which attached monitor you use and what resolution it and all the monitors are set to. Could be NU has done something silly to the file, so your mac now thinks your main monitor is a non-existent monitor, or that it is set to a non-existent resolution. Let us know how you get on.
